The Val Nervia

But it is not only that coast that makes Liguria so attractive. The hinterland with its untouched valleys and historic villages is just as fascinating. Which is why we would like to introduce you to the valleys of the Maritime Alps. Depending on your preference, you can explore this area either by car, motorbike or mountain bike. There are of course also large numbers of hiking routes to choose from.  One of the prettiest valleys must be the Val Nervia, the Nervia valley. Because of its biodiversity, the estuary near Camporosso Mare and the riverbanks of the Nervia have been declared a nature resort. The road Corso Italia (Via Roma further on) runs along the river and can be easily reached via the Autostrada dei Fiori (A10/E80) or the coastal road Via Aurelia (SP1).  On your way land inwards, you will pass the pretty village of Dolceacqua. With its antique village centre and the bridge Ponte Vecchio di Dolceacqua elegantly arching over the river Nervia, Dolceacqua, is known for being one of the most picturesque villages of the area. The Castello dei Doria, towering over the village on a giant rock, is yet another sight the village has to offer. A few kilometers stream upwards, Isolabona awaits you. The village name, loosely translated with warm hospitality or pleasant climate, best describes what makes Isolabona so special. Surrounded by old city walls, Isolabona is situated on a hill top. Narrow mews, so typical for these Ligurian mountain villages, lead to the two village squares, the Pizza Piccola and the Piazza Grande. Both village squares are adorned with historic buildings. Another sight worth mentioning is the small city palace featuring a harp music during the summer months. Just a few kilometers from here, in a side valley of the Nervia, is the village Apricale, known for its medieval layout and historic buildings. The only DOC approved red wine in Liguria, the Rossese di Dolceacqua, is being cultivated in the immediate neighbourhood. If you keep following the Nervia River, you will reach Pigna, a village with a perfectly preserved historic centre as well as a contemporary spa, fed by natural sulphur sources. The museum for local history and culture is also worth visiting. And if you wish to explore the beautiful scenery and quaint villages even further, you can follow the provincial road No. 52 into the neighbouring valley Valle Argentina where the villages Triora, Badalucco and Montalto Ligure await you. You will not be disappointed.
