In Liguria the average rainfall per year is a mere 60 days. So it is no surprise that the Russian Tsarina Maria Alexandrowa and her family came here to escape the harsh Russian winter.
Reasons for the mild climate lie in the specific geographical location. In the north and east, the Riviera is well protected from cold northern winds by high mountain ranges and the long stretched valleys allow for the mild Mediterranean climate to establish itself across the region. The weather in Liguria is more stable than in the regions of Piemont, Emilia-Romagna and Toscany.

The nearest comparable climate zone in Italy can only be found several hundreds of kilometres further to the south, on the Gulf of Napoli.
The temperature on the coast hardly ever sinks below freezing and the winter months are generally pleasant and sunny. The summer months do see the temperature rising but light breezes prevent the air from ever getting too close.
