Shopping – from rustic charm to glamorous elegance
The nostalgic weekly market in Sanremo takes up the entire Piazza Eroi Sanremesi and the surrounding mews. Equally colourful and packed with goods are the markets in Bordighera, Diano Marino and many other Ligurian towns. The oriental market “Mercato Orientale” is held in Genova. Ventimiglia however, has the biggest street market in the whole of Italy – it is a real event and you can shop to your heart’s content. Items copied from big brands can be found here too – until the police arrives. Yet, the vast majority are genuine traders offering wonderful Ligurian specialities, such as marinated olives and tomatoes. The vegetables, meat and fish usually come fresh from the farm or fishing boat.
If you are looking for something special, you should explore the antique markets in Alassio, Diano Marina and Nice or the small shops in Genova’s old town. Genova’s old town has the reputation of being a bit rough but that makes a shopping trip that little more fascinating.
For more upmarket shopping the elegant Corso Matteotti in Sanremo and the Via Roma in Genova as well as Via XX Settembre are fun to explore and when strolling through Alassio one evening, you may find a few well priced fashion bargains. And for the most glamorous shops to satisfy the highest of expectations, Monte Carlo, Nice and Cannes will have what you are looking for.
