Property description
Occupying a privileged location in the rolling foothills of the Maritime Alps, “Casa Castello” presents as an unusual place of refuge full of charm, character and history.
The unique property is a former watch tower of an ancient castle dating back to the year 1200. It was lovingly renovated by artists who made it their home. During the renovation process much attention was given to preserving the authentic design and historic structure. Vaulted ceilings, original slate steps and arched windows underline the genuine character and create a pleasant atmosphere throughout the house.
The 120 m2 living space successfully combine historic architecture with contemporary living standard. The rooms are divided over four floor levels and are both charming and functional in equal measures. The ground floor entrance hall leads to the living/dining room and from here, opens into the kitchen. A staircase connects from the entrance hall to the lower ground floor with family bathroom and a room with vaulted ceiling and a genuine rock formation. This room remains pleasantly cool during the summer months and would be perfectly suited as a guest room. The windows of both rooms look out on the mews. The staircase also connects with the upstairs bedrooms and roof terrace: On the first floor lies a spacious bedroom and on the second floor are two inter-connected bedrooms which could easily be separated into two rooms. Alternatively, the smaller of the rooms could be converted into a second bathroom. The highlight of the top floor is the roof terrace. The 30 m2 sunny terrace with summer kitchen is most certainly one of the prettiest in the village. A vine growing upwards and covering a pergola, offers shelter from the sun. It also produces beautiful grapes. From the roof terrace, unobstructed views over the village’s slate roofs and the summits of the surrounding hills make it a place where to enjoy the peace and quiet, be inspired by the surrounding beauty or sit and relax on a balmy summer evening.
The house is fitted with central heating fed by communal gas and a wood fired stove in the living room gives off warmth and enhances the pleasant ambience.
The medieval mountain village Montalto Ligure occupies a beautiful spot on the mountain ridge between Sanremo and Imperia. It offers genuine authentic charm whilst being well connected: The sea is a 20-minute drive down the road and the international airport Nice can be reached within 90 minutes. The charming neighbouring village Badalucco is only 2 km away and offers a good infra structure with restaurants and shopping facilities. The beaches of Arma di Taggia are 10 km away.
Despite its rural setting Montalto has everything to cover your daily needs: A small food shop, a bar, a post office and a pleasant restaurant. A network of hiking routes starts right outside the front door and invites to explore the surrounding olive groves and chestnut woods all the way up to the Monte Ceppo and Monte Faudo. A romantic swimming spot in the nearby river is only a short stroll along a former donkey trail away.
“Casa Castello” is an outstanding property for those who appreciate the combination of authenticity, history and comfort. A true find in one of the most authentic regions in Liguria.
